When you think of Monaco, there are two things that come to mind: Grace Kelly and the Monaco Grand Prix. Both bought an air of style and sophistication to the once quiet principality, only famed for being a tax haven and for it’s casinos, and helped to establish Monaco as the Jewel of the Mediterranean.
Grace, Princess of Monaco, resided in Monaco until her death in 1982. It was whilst Grace was part of the 1955 U.S delegation for the Cannes Film Festival, that she participated in a photo session with Prince Rainier III. It was well known that the Prince was actively seeking a wife at the time, and after just three days together, Prince Rainier III proposed to Grace. The rest, as they say, is history. After getting married in ‘The Wedding of the Century’ the couple went on to have three children; Caroline, Albert and Stephanie.
A yearly tradition, the Monaco Grand Prix brought with it a host of glamour, parties and excitement to the idyllic coastal resort. This Grand Prix, however, contained an extra piece of star quality, with the winner’s trophy being awarded by the Royal Family. Grace, on a number of occasions, awarded the prestigious trophy to the champion, a tradition that continues to this day.
