From time to time film memorabilia items come up at auction which are truly one-offs. When this happens it tends to be news-worthy. Recent years has seen Debbie Reynolds sell various items from her personal collection to raise funds when she was struck with a bankruptcy order. Amongst those items were a pair of Judy Garland's original ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz which sold for $1.75million, a pink and gold dress worn by Marilyn Monroe in Gentleman Prefer Blondes ($1.2million) and Audrey Hepburn's Ascot dress from "My Fair Lady" at $3.7 million. But all of these were surpassed by Monroe's iconic "subway" dress from The Seven Year Itch which fetched a staggering $4.6 million at the same sale in 2011.
Recently, Scarlett O'Hara's skirt and jacket worn by Viviene Leigh in Gone With the Wind sold for a slightly less eye-watering $137,000 in Beverley Hills but the big auction lot coming up is a Cartier Sunrise Ruby ring which is being sold next month by Sotheby's Geneva with an estimate of $12-18million!!
