Most people's experience of Leo Tolstoy's epic novel War & Peace is it being on their GCSE reading list. Any student reading it today should be watching the BBC's excellent adaptation, airing in the coveted Sunday night 9pm slot. The costume designer is Edward K Gibbon, who's better known for his work on Skins, but who has clearly immersed himself into the era and the characters to create a beautiful looking show. And regular readers will know we're always looking to fill a Mad Men sized hole in our tv schedules!
Gibbon apparently wanted the jewellery to make an impact and sourced items from all over the place including markets in South London, Lithunania, Prague and Rome as well as pieces especially designed by a Russian jeweller. The results are stunning with beautiful chandelier earrings, pretty vintage lockets and delicate necklaces. Keep checking back to see how it influences our future collections or take a look at our Pinterest board here.
It's also worth noting that Audrey Hepburn played Natasha Rostova in the 1956 film version directed by King Vidor and co-starring her husband Mel Ferrer!
